The 1/2 V/Butterfly save is most effective when a goaltender is
forced to move laterally during the save. It is extremely effective
on breakaways, 2 on 0s, and 2 on 1s. The benefits of
this save selection are the goalies ability to extend the
leading leg to maximize lower net coverage. It is also useful to
control the distance or speed of slide by using the inside edge
of their lead leg. If the play is reversed, the goalie can plant
the edge and reverse direction.

The Playing Big goalies
hands are separated and mostly outside the scoring area. This
creates the well known 6 hole between the blocker and body.
This hole is extremely difficult to defend. |
|

The Staubar goalie has maximized net coverage by
moving his blocker forward he has closed the 6 hole. He has
great balance and can recover from this position quickly. |

Playing Big- goalies
blocker hand is up and back which pushes his center of gravity
farther back. The catch glove is resting on his pads, which
it often falls behind the leg pads exposing more net. A goalie
in this position has poor balance. |
|

The Staubar goalies weight and center of
gravity is directly over his knees creating excellent
balance. He only needs to move slightly to cover the smaller
holes. With the hands closer to the puck, he maximizes his net
coverage. |
