Full V/ Butterfly Saves

The Full V/Butterfly save is an excellent save for screens, tips and deflections. The full V/Butterfly is used to seal off the lower two-thirds of the net. In the following pictures we will demonstrate the common problems in its execution. We call this improper finish position “Playing Big.” Pay close attention to the goalies hands in the comparisons.

Playing Big-goalie is directly contradictating the purpose of using the Full V/Butterfly save. The goalie’s hands are high and away from the body, which restricts his ability to control rebounds. One of the toughest saves for a goalie to make is closing the holes under the arms. The goalie is unable to rotate their stick (just like the basic stance pictures) to redirect the puck away. The stick-flip is the only way to control the rebound.

The Staubar™ goalie is executing the save correctly. The goalie’s hands are Low & Close and forward of his body. The hands are free and clear allowing the stick to rotate. This allows him to direct the puck into the corner. He maintains excellent balance for a recovery save. There are no holes under his arms. The goalie works in one direction inside out.

Playing Big – A shot or tip from this location has a high probability of scoring. Notice that half of the goalies glove’s are outside the net, as indicated by the ropes. With this much net to cover between the arms and legs it is almost impossible to close them in time. His weight and center of gravity is back resulting in poor balance, likely causing the goalie to finish the save on his back.

The Staubar™ in this position it would have to be a perfect shot or tip to score. A goalie in this position needs only make small movements with his hands to cover the holes. His center of gravity is over his knee’s giving him excellent balance. Recovery saves are easier to make. Any rebounds are kept in front of him much like a catcher in baseball.
