  Our Certified Instructors

Our certified instructors are committed to excellence in the teaching and training of hockey goalkeepers. One of these experienced teachers will be on the ice at every academy session.

Robb Stauber

Robb Stauber was a Minnesota High School All-State goalkeeper at Duluth Denfeld H.S. He attended the University of Minnesota and in 1988 was the first goalie ever to win the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the outstanding U.S. college hockey player. He was a college All-American, a WCHA MVP, and team MVP while playing for the Gophers. Robb was recently named one of the top 50 players in WCHA history.

Robb played 10 years of professional hockey. He was a two time AHL All-Star and played in the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals with the LA Kings. He also played for the Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals, and New York Rangers. Robb is co-director of the Academy and the goalie coach for the Golden Gophers.

In the last four years, Robb successfully developed the first training device exclusively for goalies. A training breakthrough, The patented Staubar Trainer is achieving positive results with serious goalies at every level of hockey.

Jeff Hall

Jeff Hall was the Varsity Edina High School goalie from 1996 – 98. He was in the nets when Edina won the 1997 AA Minnesota State High School Championship. He was an All-State tournament team selection in 1997.

Jeff played hockey for Bethel College, St. Paul, MN. Recently, he has served as goalie coach for Cedar Rapids (USHL) and Shattuck - St. Mary's Prep School. Jeff has been a certified goalie instructor for the Goalcrease since 1998.

Jeff holds a B.S. degree in Physical Education from Bethel College.

Steve DeBus

Steve played varsity hockey at Rochester Mayo High School. He spent the 1991-1993 seasons with the U.S.H.L. Rochester Mustangs followed by a distinguished career with the University of Minnesota Gophers from 1994-1997. In 1997, Steve was named an All-WCHA goalie. He continued to play professional hockey in the minor leagues from 1998 – 2003 and was named to the All-Star team in 2001. Steve was the Head Coach of the Rochester Youth Summer Camp from 1998 – 2004. He became a certified Goalcrease instructor in 2004.

Steve holds a B.S. degree in Natural Resources and American Indian Studies from the University of Minnesota.

Laura Gieselman - Evanson

Laura is a 2003 graduate of St. Cloud University. As goalie and captain of the Division I women’s hockey team she received the Most Valuable Player award, Academic Achievement award and was selected Star of the Season by the St. Cloud Times. Laura spent three summers as an on-ice hockey camp counselor at Shattuck St. Mary's, Faribault, MN. She has trained with Robb and Paul for over 5 years and has been a certified Goalcrease instructor since 2003.

Laura earned B.S. degrees in Sports Management and Marketing with a minor in Athletic Coaching.


Joe Shannon

Joe attended Shattuck - St. Mary's in Faribault for five years where he won the National Championship in 2001. He pursued a career in Junior Hockey with the AWHL Helena Big Horns in Montana for the 2001 – 2002 season. He spent his 2002 – 2003 season as a member of the Central Texas Blackhawks and the Northwest Knights hockey teams. Joe has been a student of Robb Stauber and Paul Ostby almost ten years. Joe has been a certified Goalcrease Instructor since 2002.



Nate Ziemski

Nate played high school hockey for Duluth Central.  His extensive junior hockey experience includes a Junior B national championship before playing in both the NAHL and USHL.  He then played D-III college hockey for the University of Wisconsin-Superior where he holds numerous goaltending records,  was named All-American twice (’01,’03), and also won a national championship (’02).  He played pro hockey for the Jacksonville Baracudas in ’03-’04. Nate has been a certified Goalcrease instructor since 2002 and started coaching full-time in 2006.

Nate holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from UWS with a minor in coaching.

Dan Hoehne

Dan Hoehne played for Duluth East High School as the starting goalie for the 1998-2001 seasons, and was named MVP in 2000 and 2001.  In 2000, he was also named the Northland Goaltender of the Year. Dan went on to pursue a career in Junior A hockey as a member of Borderland Thunder in Canada (SIJHL), and was named MVP of the team in 2003 and 2004. In 2005, Dan was invited to attend the Iowa Stars (AHL) training camp. Dan attended a Stauber/ Ostby camp during his youth hockey career and has been a certified instructor since 2005. Dan became a certified personal trainer with an A.C.E certification in 2006. 

Josh Tucker

Josh played varsity hockey for Wayzata High School from 1997-2000. He spent the following two seasons playing goalie for Gustavus Adolphus College.  Josh attended his first Stauber/Otsby goalie camp at the age of 11. He began assisting Paul Otsby during weekly goalie camps for Wayzata and became an official Stauber/Otsby goalie instructor in 1998. In 2003 Josh moved to California where he started his own private training consulting business for goalies. Having returned to Minnesota, Josh is back with the Goalcrease as a certified instructor.

Josh holds a degree in psychology.  In addition to coaching, Josh is also a sports vision specialist with USA Sports Vision, the Goalcrease’s in-house vision training center.

Rob Anderson

Rob was an all-star athlete for Park Center High School playing in the state tournament for golf and performing as the varsity goalie from 1997-2000.  After graduating from high school, Rob played goalie for the University of St. Thomas from 2000-2002.  In 2004 he graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a Bachelors Degree in Business Law. Rob attended his first Stauber/Otsby camp in 1995, and continued to attend them until 1998. From 1999 until 2003 Rob coached at the Minnesota Goalie Academy. He also worked as the Goalie Director for Spring Lake Park High School from 2001-2002.  In September of 2007 he came became a certified Goalcrease Instructor.

Craig Vardy

Craig grew up in Washington DC and spent his youth playing for local teams. Craig played varsity hockey for Stone Bridge High School in Virginia where he led the team to win two state championships. He also holds the record at his High School for the winningest record with 45 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie in all four years of High School.  In 2002 he joined the Junior A team, the Danville Wings. He went on to join the USHL Sioux Falls Stampede in 2003. After Sioux Falls, Craig spent two years playing goalie for Lebanon Valley College. He then went on to play Professional hockey for the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League and the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

Craig began training with Robb and the Goalcrease when his Tulsa Oilers coach recommended it in 2006. After spending a month in Minnesota training, Craig came back regularly for more improvement. In the summer of 2007 he moved Minnesota and became a certified Goalcrease Instructor. Aside from his experience with the Goalcrease, Craig also coached youth hockey in Virginia. 

Billy Sias

Billy played goalie for the Academy of Holy Angels for two years before joining the Minnesota Owls Junior League team in 2006. While playing for Holy Angels, Billy helped led his team to the state tournament where they took second place.

Billy attended his first Stauber/Otsby camp at the age of eight, and has been training at the Goalcrease ever since. He has also spent many years as a mentor coach for younger goalies within his association. In September of 2007 he officially became a certified Goalcrease Instructor.

Derek Bishop

Derek played varsity hockey for Osseo High School from 2005-2007.  During his junior year at Osseo, Derek won the Mr. Hustle Award.  He also went on to receive the Unsung Hero award during his senior year.  Derek currently plays goalie for the Twin Cities Northern Lights Junior hockey team.

Derek has trained with Robb and the Goalcrease since the doors first opened in 2002. He has been a certified goalie instructor since September of 2007. 

Ian Andersen

Ian grew up in Portland Oregon and played youth and High School hockey on local teams. In 1995 he moved to Minnesota where he played goalie at St. Johns University. During his first season at St. Johns, Ian won the 7th man award. He also helped led his team to become the MIAC Regular Season and Playoff Champions in 1996 and 1997. Ian also led his team to two NCAA DIII playoff appearances. Ian ended his college career a Hockey 4-year varsity letter winner. He also graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences.

Following his career at St. Johns, Ian became the Head Goaltending Instructor at Stan Smyl Hockey School. In 2000 Ian began working as the Hockey Operations/Video Coordinator at the University of Notre Dame. After Notre Dame, Ian went on to become the Assistant to the Head Coach at Michigan State University from 2003-2005. During this time Ian also spent two summers as the Goaltending Instructor at Just Goalies Hockey School. He also coached at Bob Mason-Dwayne Roloson Hockey School in the summer of 2006. In September of 2005 Ian joined the staff of the Minnesota Wild as the Video Coordinator. In September of 2007, Ian officially became a certified Goalcrease instructor.

Owen Zeumer

Owen grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and played youth hockey there until he moved to Grand Rapids MN for his senior year of High School in 1987. Owen went on to play goalie for two years at Michigan Tech University. He then spent two years goaltending for St. Olaf College, from 1991 to 1993. During that time Owen took his team to the M.I.A.C. conference tournament where he set the record for the most saves in the championship game, with 61 saves. Owen’s outstanding performance in the M.I.A.C. tournament won him the conference tournament MVP.  Following his college career, Owen attended training camp with the Utica NY Bulldogs of the Colonial Hockey League.

After ending his competitive playing career, Owen spent four years as the Head Coach for Roseville High School’s Girls Varsity hockey team. He also coached at Goaliesonly Inc. and served as the Goalie Coach for Hockey Ministries International Summer Camps.  Owen also attended the Goalcrease for recreational training, and in September of 2007 he became a certified Goalcrease Instructor.

Owen and his wife, Ronna, are the proud parents of two young boys, who someday hope to be Goalcrease Goalies as well!

Nick Czaplewski

Nick Czaplewski is the Retail Manager for Stauber's Goalcrease, Inc. and the guru of goalie equipment. A goalie himself, Nick knows the what difference the right equipment and the right fit can mean to your game.

Nick's goalie career began in Youth Hockey, where he moved from forward to goaltender as an eighth grader.  He knew right away that he was in the best position on the ice and went on to play for Winona High School and the University of Wisconsin-Stout where he earned a BS in Business and International Marketing.

When he's not at the Goalcrease sharing his equipment expertise and making sure that the Goalcrease is well stocked with the best equipment available, he's on the ice playing Men's A hockey in the metro area.
